The Limitations of Generative AI

While the superpowers of Generative AI are undoubtedly impressive, it’s essential to understand that AI also has limitations. Here are a few key points to keep in mind as you explore AI:

1. Potential for Errors and Inaccuracies

Although AI is highly advanced, it’s not perfect. Sometimes, AI can produce inaccurate, inconsistent, or irrelevant content to the given context. This phenomenon is known as “hallucination,” where AI generates content that seems plausible but is not grounded in reality. For example, an AI writing assistant might create a paragraph about a historical event that never actually occurred. Think of it like a really, really smart six-year-old who knows (almost) everything but needs to be told exactly what you want to be done and, every so often, makes something up.

It’s interesting to think for a moment about how the retrieval of information has advanced, websites vs AI. Before 2022, if you wanted to know something or learn something, you’d fire up your computer or phone, head over to Google, type in a question, and be presented with a list of websites where Google’s algorithm believes what you’re looking for could be; but when anyone can publish a web page that says anything, how do we know whether it’s factual? Except for very few instances, we don’t. I’d argue that because AI is trained on volumes of data that includes all the websites ever published, among other training sources, it is for the most part highly accurate, and hallucinations happen relatively infrequently. Still, be aware that they do exist. Like anything else, this is merely a tool, but it’s a tool that will iteratively improve daily.

This is why you should never, ever take generative AI output and use it as your own without fully vetting and checking to make sure what it says makes sense and really did happen. There should always be a human review and editing process if you’re using it as a writing tool.

2. Bias in AI Systems

AI systems can inherit biases from the data they are trained on, which can lead to unfair or discriminatory outputs. Bias in AI refers to systematic errors that lead to discriminatory results, often reflecting societal biases related to gender, race, age, or other factors. For instance, a biased AI hiring tool might unfairly discriminate against certain groups of applicants based on demographic information.

3. Ethical Considerations

As AI becomes more advanced and integrated into our daily lives, we must also consider the ethical implications of its use. One example of an ethical dilemma in AI is the use of facial recognition technology by law enforcement. While this technology can help solve crimes, it also raises concerns about privacy, consent, and potential misuse. Balancing the benefits and risks of AI is an ongoing challenge that requires input from various stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, and the general public.

It’s important to note that the topics of ethics and bias in AI is vast and complex, far beyond the scope of this 10-day quickstart course. However, we encourage you to explore this subject further on your own, as it will become increasingly relevant as AI continues to advance.
