While the superpowers of Generative AI are undoubtedly impressive, it’s essential to understand that AI also has limitations. Here are a few key points to keep in mind as you explore AI:

Although AI is highly advanced, it’s not perfect. Sometimes, AI can produce inaccurate, inconsistent, or irrelevant content to the given context. This phenomenon is known as “hallucination,” where AI generates content that seems plausible but is not grounded in reality. For example, an AI writing assistant might create a paragraph about a historical event that never actually occurred. Think of it like a really, really smart six-year-old who knows (almost) everything but needs to be told exactly what you want to be done and, every so often, makes something up.
It’s interesting to think for a moment about how the retrieval of information has advanced, websites vs AI. Before 2022, if you wanted to know something or learn something, you’d fire up your computer or phone, head over to Google, type in a question, and be presented with a list of websites where Google’s algorithm believes what you’re looking for could be; but when anyone can publish a web page that says anything, how do we know whether it’s factual? Except for very few instances, we don’t. I’d argue that because AI is trained on volumes of data that includes all the websites ever published, among other training sources, it is for the most part highly accurate, and hallucinations happen relatively infrequently. Still, be aware that they do exist. Like anything else, this is merely a tool, but it’s a tool that will iteratively improve daily.

This is why you should never, ever take generative AI output and use it as your own without fully vetting and checking to make sure what it says makes sense and really did happen. There should always be a human review and editing process if you’re using it as a writing tool.

Bias in AI refers to systematic errors that lead to discriminatory results, often reflecting societal biases related to gender, race, age, or other factors.
